MMA ODDS AND ENDS FOR WEDNESDAY: INJURIES DERAIL BIG FIGHTS
We covered the reduction of the huge upcoming heavyweight co-main event for UFC Fight Night 76 yesterday with the statement that Stipe Miocic was made to back from his struggle against Ben Rothwell, however there is more to the story and also a few other fight announcements/injuries to discuss now. UFC appears to be looking for a brief notice substitute for Miocic to step in and fight Rothwell in Dublin, and a couple of notable names set their names into the ring. The first was Matt Mitrione, who had been fighting very well against Rothwell before this year before diving right into a takedown attempt that got him submitted immediately via guillotine choke. Mitrione wouldn’t likely be the primary option due to his quick defeat, but he’s a case considering his appetite for redemption. The largest issue with Mitrione right now is the simple fact he’s currently booked to combat Travis Browne in January. Another and most intriguing replacement opportunity came from out of left field as world class kickboxer Tyrone Spong requested an opportunity to fight Rothwell. Spong, who now trains together with the Blackzilians in Boco Ratan, has made a name for himself as possibly the very best light heavyweight striker on the planet with a kickboxing listing of 74-7-1 with one no contest. His mixed martial arts qualifications, however, are much more sparse. Spong is now 2-0 at MMA, with just two successes under the World collection of penalizing banner, even though he has not fought an MMA bout in over two decades and hasn’t competed professionally in any combat sport since suffering a leg injury against Gokhan Saki 18 months ago. The biggest issue here would be money, as I’m convinced signing Spong to some UFC bargain on short notice would not come cheap. In other accident replacement information… Justin Lawrence vs Emmanuel Sanchez — Bellator 145 Regrettably, an accident to former Bellator winner Pat Curran has forced him from his struggle against Justin Lawrence just over three months before his bout was set to happen. In steps Emmanuel Sanchez, a 25-year older fighter from this Roufusport Gym in Milwaukee using an 11-2 record all around. Sanchez is currently 3-1 beneath the Bellator bannerlosing a decision to Curran currently and most recently picked up a split decision victory over Henry Corrales two and a half ago at Bellator 143. This will certainly not be a simple for fight for Sanchez, especially on short notice and with such a quick turnaround. I would anticipate Lawrence to be a medium to heavy preferred by the time that the odds are drawn upward.
